President Kagame officially opens Girubuntu Education Center

Kigali, 27 July 2011

Following a meeting at Urugwiro Village, UK State Secretary for International Development Andrew Mitchell welcomed President Kagame to the Umubano Project-the Girubuntu Education Center in Niboye, Kicukiro District. The education center comprises of nine classrooms, a computer room and four playgrounds.

Thanking Honorable Andrew Mitchell and members of Umubano Project, President Kagame referred to the project as “a symbol of strong partnership between the people of the United Kingdom and the people of Rwanda.”

Founded by Honorable Andrew Mitchell, Umubano is a Conservative Party social action project that brings together hundreds of volunteers to work on projects ranging from health, education, private sector and justice. Referring to Rwanda’s commitment to advance these fields, President Kagame urged the volunteers of Umubano Project to share the knowledge of Rwanda they have gained through this project. “We are a country with leaders who care for their people,” he added.

President Kagame was awarded a gift from both Umubano Project and the Kicukiro District for his continuous commitment to the education sector in Rwanda. The impact of Rwanda’s focus on education was best summarized by the words of the Girubuntu students: “we are the presidents and ministers of tomorrow’s Rwanda; we are marching along a path of education, uniting to rebuild a brighter Rwanda.”
